 When you consider that Autocad to Autocad transfers within an office are sometimes fraught with peril, brace yourself, but hope for the best. If the engineer has done this often 
enough, you should have a drawing in a flavor that Datacad (and older versions of Autocad) can read. If not, ask for "2000i" or earlier. 

 Once imported, many of these Autocad files have lterally hundreds of layers, symbols with insertion points miles from the symbols themselves, and a host of other peculiarities (Revit) 
Layer manager is your best friend (delete empty layers). I also tend to instantly set up a go-to-view or two that are useful and use those as x-refs in the drawings I'm working in. 

If you don't have to do this really often, the challenges are refreshing.
