Re: DBUG> VectorWorks

Harry,

The learning curve depends on your Cadd background, experience, and openness to different way of thinking.

I switched to pen tablet with DataCad partly because of my wrist and of Vectorworks. It took me about a week and half to get used to pen tablet again. The people I know use Vectorworks with a pen tablet - a lot of pushing and pulling and not much data input or typing. The snaps are a lot nicer to use in VW, kinda like Sketchup but nicer. Anyway, I still remember when I started using DataCad's preset scaled window-in views - it was frustrating coming from Autocad's free zoom, but later on, I came to appreciate this feature.

Layers are not like in DataCad or Autocad, but more like RevIt. I hardly had to think about layers. They are more like your sheet - with GoToView,MSP, Xrefs, with title block info all combined to produce the sheet. The "classes" are basically your layers in DataCad, and "layers" are all the info tied to make produce your sheet. VW is one of the easiest program to create "base plan"- without any kind of xref's.

The biggest hurdle for me is accepting the idea of push /pull and using the toolbar and icons, and getting away from typing anything My brain and my hands are so used to the keyboard and routines of AutoCad and DataCad that 20 years of experience actually lengthened my learning curve in VW . Observing and being around people who knows VW will cut down the learning curve substantially. RevIt experience will help. I would say if you are young, 2-3 months, and if you carry a lot of software Cadd baggage 4-6 months.

Just a caveat - my brief experience with VW made me realize how old DataCad and AutoCad are - but they are the tools I am used to, most comfortable and most productive with.

Have fun and Good Luck.

Mar

Does anyone use VectorWorks? If so, what is the learning curve like from DCad? I remember a few years ago there was a member of this group who worked for Nemetschek. I wonder if they offer a discount on VectorWorks for users of DataCad?Any thoughts or comments will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Harry
