Re: DBUG> VectorWorks
Funny you should ask. The principal of the firm I work with and share
space with has been using VectorWorks for some time, migrating to it
from a Mac based CAD platform called Architrion which expired after
being orphaned by its author sometime in the 90s. Recently he has
brought his son (a graphics guy, not an architect) in to work on a
project, and started him learning VW. The son seems to know Autocad
reasonably well, but I'm interested in watching his learning
experience. The firm also is working with a "designer" who, though a
Columbia U MArch, has never gone through internship and never used any
CAD. So they are trying to get her to take up VW. I've been urging her
to choose Datacad, but it looks like I'm losing. So VW is very much on
my mind these days.
Personally, I dislike VW. A couple of years ago, I collaborated with a
sole prop. firm on a school project, and the guy worked in VW. Sharing
files with him was a nightmare. Maybe it was the way he set it up, but
the DWG files he gave me were in flaky layers, but . . . well, I'm
finding it tough to put it in a few words. Let it stand that, while the
visuals on the VW web site are nifty, it is so different from Datacad
that I'm really not interested in it myself.
Good luck if you're thinking of going that way. I'll keep watching,
will let you know if anything interesting happens.

Does anyone use VectorWorks? If so, what is the learning curve like
from DCad? I remember a few years ago there was a member of this
group who worked for Nemetschek. I wonder if they offer a discount
on VectorWorks for users of DataCad?Any thoughts or comments will be
very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Harry
