Select the symbol by Cntrl>right click, from the pop up menu select
symbol>explode>pick your method

In version 11, you can place it as a self Xref, and change the
linetype in the Xref manager. I do this for background plans, but
don't bother to make a symbol out of it. I guess because I can change
the background as needed if it is not a symbol.
But I do change the line type to screened. Works as a self referenced
symbol too.
