Whenever I have to show wood endgrain, I use the 3 pt arc
in the arcs menu (be sure Ortho is off).  It goes very 
quickly.  I have saved my arc patterns for various sizes of
wood as symbols as well.  It isn't elegant, but it works.  
I think you could do the same thing for the length of wood.
