amimation .avi files

To anyone,

I have been geeting into animations of models using Renderize Live. There 
easy to run with .flc files within Renderize, however, I wish to save the 
animations as .avi files (one of Renderizes' file save choices).

Has anyone been able to run .avi files within standard Windows?

I am running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and have tried running these files 
under the Windows Media Player - choosing  Device "Video for Windows"
which shows the .avi extention.

I get back a message saying
    "The specified file cannot be played on the specified MCI device. The   
   file may be corrupt, or not in the correct format."
