Re: DBUG> Windows XP - OT
Hello Allen:
>Been trying to get a laptop WITHOUT XP. No joy in Mudville.
Well, a laptop with WinXP (we have one at work with Pro) can be a bit of a bear with printers. If you have a
network or if you use a printer in your office, you will need to have different "user" for when you are not
connected to it. Otherwise it gets very flaky when the printer isn't "there;" and it crashes DataCAD -- forget
about setting up a plotter driver for your service and plot to file. If you have to rename the printer (to make it
the same as any other DataCAD stations) -- ya gotta do it when you install the printer, because you can't change it
after the fact...
Also, be aware that WinXP Home has a 5 user limit for networking, and neither flavor of WinXP has NetBEUI
installed. You need to find it on your installation disks (good luck if its a proprietary set of disks!) or you
might be able to find the two files that you need on the MS web page. This has caused a snag with one of the
Win98SE machines -- they just don't "see" each other, even with TCP/IP installed on both, and the printer that's
shared on the Win98SE comes and goes away with frustrating irregularity. The Win2K station has no trouble with
either of the Win98SE machines or the WinXP Pro laptop.
No, I don't like WinXP -- there is also a dearth of drivers, and it is still quite "young" and quirky.
Sincerely, Neil Blanchard
