Lloyd,
Not to burst your bubble, and of course the important thing is that you're
up and running in Highly Efficient & Profitable mode, but ... the increased
speed you're now seeing is probably not because XP is faster but because
your Win98 installation had problems that caused it to be (among other
things) slow. Indeed, most of the reviews I've read of XP have said it is
marginally *slower* than 98, not faster.
The longer a system has been in use, the more software has been installed
and uninstalled, the more program and driver upgrades and patches have been
applied ... the more the system's performance will be degraded. That's
just the way it is with Windows. As I posted here not long ago, one way to
get a cheap performance boost periodically is to reformat your hard disk
and start over. And this doesn't have to be a lot of work, at least not
after the first time. A method like Nick Pyner's, in which the image of a
freshly set-up and thoroughly tested "clean" install of Windows and one's
core programs is a burned to a CD, can have you back at Square One in a
matter of minutes. It always amazes me how fast the exact same collection
of hardware "feels" when nothing is done to it except a fresh reinstall of
the OS and software.
Again, it's good that your initial experience with XP is positive. But for
those who might be wondering if a switch to XP is the quick route to a big
performance boost ... eh, I'm afraid I'm a skeptic on that one.
