It sounds like the actual symbols are not located in the "right" place -- in the templates that are broken, are the SM3 files actually in the locations indicated by the paths in the templates?
As for the Read Only part -- this comes (usually) from using a CD-R or CD-RW to move copies of files. You might be able to right-click on the directories and remove the Read Only status of all the files therein -- this is supposed to work. Or, you may have to resort to some DOS Attrib commands that I will have to ask others to reiterate.
