Offhandedly, 3 out of 3 non-operational ought to be enough to suspect the
port is far from kosher, particularly as each has a unique type of
connection, i.e. scanner cable, printer cable, and no cable. 

FWIW
1. The dongle seems not to care what sort the LPT port is, or which for
that matter.
2. The newest printer I have, an Epson 1520, doesn't care either.
3. The scanner will work on an SPP port but is a lot better on an EPP port.
4. I don't think the type of port is your problem.
