DBUG> Tip of the day: Front sheet pictorials
371 Front sheet pictorials
Granted, not every job has a budget that allows for pictorial work, such as
perspective renderings. But here's a way of looking at this: You, or
someone in your studio, could use the practice, and what better way to do a
little something illustrative that represents a real project? So think of it
as an opportunity to make yourself (or a team member) go through what it
takes to produce at least a simple depiction of the project. Time
permitting, do something better. You may find that what you learn during the
production will have a payback, though perhaps not in cash this time around.
You'll gain a better grasp of the challenges and techniques, and be that
much better prepared to tackle the task next time around. Hey, you might
even discover some spatial relationships that cause you to pause and
reconsider the design itself!
Some are already producing such cover sheet illustrations. Others are
masters at rendering, and do beautiful work (EBiii, Jim Goodman, et al.)
Don't be shy, give it a try!
The illustrations don't necessarily need to fill the whole sheet to begin
with. A little "sketch" might be OK, enough to communicate the concept but
masking minor deficiencies for the moment. Doctored Hidden Line Removals of
combination 2.5d/3d models will get you started. Move from there to more
sophisticated techniques. Those who do more modeling in 3d to begin with
have a jump on it.
But just dig into it. You'll improve with every cycle. Some day you won't be
able to imagine NOT doing cover illustrations!
